Parents Checklist / Early Signs
Is My Child Showing Signs of Delay? A Guide for Concerned Parents
If you're reading this page, you're probably worried. Maybe your child isn't talking yet. Maybe they're struggling in school despite being smart. Maybe a teacher or relative said something that planted a seed of concern in your mind.
First, take a breath. You're not alone, and you're doing the right thing by seeking information.
At Samatva Nurturing Futures in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai (easily accessible to Mumbai parents via Atal Setu), we work with hundreds of families navigating these exact worries. This checklist will help you identify early warning signs across different developmental areas—and more importantly, understand what to do next.
🚨 Important: This is NOT a Diagnostic Tool
This checklist helps you identify red flags that warrant professional evaluation. It does NOT replace assessment by a qualified developmental pediatrician, psychologist, or special educator.
If you check multiple boxes, please schedule a consultation. Early intervention makes a profound difference.
👶 Speech & Language Development
Age 12-18 Months:
Warning Signs:
⚠️ Not babbling or making varied sounds ("ba-ba," "da-da," "ma-ma")
⚠️ Not responding to their name when called
⚠️ Not pointing at things they want
⚠️ Not using gestures like waving "bye-bye" or shaking head "no"
⚠️ Doesn't seem to understand simple words like "no" or "bye"
What's Normal: By 12 months, most children say at least one word. By 18 months, they should have 10-20 words and be combining gestures with sounds.
Age 18-24 Months:
Warning Signs:
⚠️ Not speaking at all by 18 months (Many parents in Ulwe visit us asking, "My child is 2 years old but not speaking yet.")
⚠️ If your child has not said their first words by 18 months, or has stopped speaking after previously using words, it may be a sign of speech delay
⚠️ Only using single words, no two-word combinations ("mama milk," "more cookie")
⚠️ Not imitating words or sounds
⚠️ Doesn't understand simple instructions ("Give me the ball")
⚠️ Vocabulary of fewer than 50 words by age 2
What's Normal: By age 2, most children use 50+ words and are combining two words ("more juice," "daddy go").
Age 2-3 Years:
Warning Signs:
⚠️ Can't be understood by strangers (unclear speech)
⚠️ Not using simple sentences ("I want cookie")

Warning Signs:
⚠️ Speech is very difficult to understand
⚠️ Leaves out or substitutes sounds consistently ("tat" for "cat")

⚠️ Takes everything literally (doesn't understand jokes or idioms)
⚡ Attention & Activity Level (ADHD Signs)

⚠️ Talks excessively, can't take turns in conversation
⚠️ Doesn't seem to listen when spoken to directly
⚠️ Loses things constantly (toys, shoes, belongings)

Step 4: Start Intervention While Awaiting Diagnosis
You don't need a formal diagnosis to begin support.
At Samatva, we can start working on:
Communication skills
Attention and focus
Pre-academic or academic skills
Behavioral strategies
Sensory regulation
Social skills
Occupational Therapy based Functional Skills Training - If your child struggles with writing, dressing, eating, balance, coordination, or sensory sensitivity, everyday tasks can become frustrating for both child and parent. Many families search for occupational therapy support when they notice poor motor control, messy handwriting, clumsiness, or sensitivity to sounds and textures. Our functional skill training program, guided by a trained physical educator, focuses on improving fine motor skills, gross motor coordination, sensory regulation, and daily independence. We use structured, activity-based methods to strengthen practical abilities needed for school and home life. Parents receive guidance on supporting these skills daily, helping children feel more confident, capable, and independent.
Language and Communication Development - Is your child not speaking yet, using very few words, or struggling to express needs? Many parents worry when their child cannot communicate clearly, does not respond when spoken to, or becomes frustrated due to poor language skills. Our Language & Communication Development Program supports children in improving understanding, vocabulary, sentence formation, and social communication through structured, interactive activities. While we are not speech therapists, our program focuses on strengthening everyday communication, attention, and expressive skills that support language growth. Parents are guided on how to encourage communication at home. This program helps reduce frustration, build confidence, and support clearer communication in daily life, school, and social situations.
Many of our families begin intervention before receiving a formal diagnosis—and that's perfectly fine.
💭 Common Parent Questions
"Should I wait and see if they outgrow it?"
Short answer: No.
The "wait and see" approach often leads to:
Lost critical early intervention time
Development of learned helplessness and low self-esteem
Widening gap between child and peers
More intensive intervention needed later
Better approach: Evaluate now. If there's no issue, you'll have peace of mind. If there is an issue, you'll have caught it early.
"What if I'm overreacting? Will people think I'm a paranoid parent?"
It's better to be "paranoid" and wrong than dismissive and miss critical signs.
Professionals who work with children would much rather see a parent who's proactive than one who waits until challenges become crises.
**"Will my child be labeled or stigmatized?"
Labels vs. Support:
Without evaluation and support:
Child struggles and doesn't know why
Gets labeled "lazy," "naughty," "stupid" by peers and adults
Develops anxiety, depression, behavioral issues
With evaluation and support:
Child understands their brain works differently
Gets strategies and accommodations that help them succeed
Develops confidence and self-advocacy skills
Stigma comes from ignorance, not from getting help.
"What if it's just their personality or my parenting?"
Neurodevelopmental differences are not caused by:
Parenting style
Screen time
Diet
Lack of discipline
"Not trying hard enough"
If your child is showing multiple red flags, it's not your fault—and it's not their fault. It's biology, and it requires specialized support.
"Can they still go to regular school?"
Many children with developmental differences attend mainstream schools successfully with:
Appropriate accommodations (extra time, seating placement, modified assignments)
Therapy support outside school hours
Teacher training and collaboration
Individualized Education Plans (IEP)
Some children thrive better in:
Resource room settings (part mainstream, part special education)
Special schools designed for specific needs
Alternative education (NIOS, homeschool with support)
Our goal: Help your child access the educational environment where they can succeed and be happy.
