β‘ 2. ADHD & Hyperactivity
Beyond "He's Just Energetic": Understanding ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting attention, impulse control, and activity levels. Children with ADHD aren't "naughty" or "lazy"βtheir brains are wired differently, making it genuinely harder to focus, sit still, and regulate emotions.
ADHD shows up in three ways: Inattentive type, Hyperactive-Impulsive type, or Combined type.
Signs Your Child Might Have ADHD:
Inattention:
Difficulty sustaining focus on tasks or play
Doesn't seem to listen when spoken to directly
Fails to finish homework or chores (not due to defiance)
Loses things constantly (pencils, books, jackets)
Easily distracted by external stimuli or internal thoughts
Forgetful in daily activities
Avoids tasks requiring sustained mental effort
Hyperactivity:
Fidgets constantly, can't sit still
Leaves seat when expected to remain seated
Runs or climbs in inappropriate situations
Can't play quietly
Talks excessively
Always "on the go" as if "driven by a motor"
Impulsivity:
Blurts out answers before questions are complete
Difficulty waiting their turn
Interrupts or intrudes on others
Acts without thinking about consequences
Emotional outbursts and difficulty regulating emotions
How Samatva Helps Children with ADHD:

π 3. Learning Disabilities (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia)
When "Try Harder" Isn't the Problem
Learning disabilities are neurological differences that affect how the brain processes information. Children with learning disabilities have average or above-average intelligence but struggle with specific academic skills.
These children aren't lazy. Their brains are wired differently, and they need different teaching methods.
A. Dyslexia (Reading Disability)
What It Looks Like:
Difficulty recognizing letters and sounds
Slow, labored reading despite practice
Confuses similar-looking letters (b/d, p/q)
Skips or adds words when reading
Poor spelling despite memorization efforts
Reads word by word, loses comprehension
Avoids reading aloud or gets anxious about it
Samatva's Dyslexia Remediation:
Orton-Gillingham based multisensory reading instruction
Phonemic awareness and phonics mastery
Decoding strategies for unfamiliar words
Reading fluency building
Comprehension strategies (visualization, questioning, summarizing)
Assistive technology training when appropriate
B. Dysgraphia (Writing Disability)
What It Looks Like:
Illegible handwriting despite effort
Incorrect pencil grip causing fatigue or pain
Inconsistent letter size, spacing, alignment
Very slow writing speed
Difficulty organizing thoughts on paper

C. Dyscalculia (Math Disability)
What It Looks Like:
Difficulty understanding number concepts
Can't visualize quantities or estimate

Strategic fact fluency (not just drill and kill)
Multi-step problem solving strategies

Why Early Intervention Matters:
The earlier we identify and address learning disabilities, the better. Without support, children develop learned helplessness and believe they're "stupid"βwhich damages self-esteem far more than the disability itself.
Parent Testimonial:
"Shweta Mam who owns SAMATVA NURTURING FUTURE centre is an extremely dedicated, skilled and compassionate educatorβ¦she has an excellent teaching strategiesβ¦her consistent support and guidance have made gross difference in my childβs progressβ¦.Samatva nurturing future is one of the best centreβ¦π©·π©· " β Google Review - Online Parent
π§ 4. Mild to Moderate Intellectual Disabilities
Intelligence Isn't Everything: Building Functional Independence
Intellectual disability (ID) means a child's cognitive development is slower than peers, affecting their ability to learn, reason, and solve problems. But cognitive delay doesn't mean a child can't learnβthey just need a different approach and realistic goals.
Signs of Intellectual Disability:
Reaching developmental milestones late (walking, talking, toilet training)
Difficulty with abstract concepts (time, money, cause-effect)
Struggles with memory and generalization of skills
Below-average academic performance across all subjects
Difficulty with age-appropriate self-care skills
Limited problem-solving abilities
Social immaturity compared to peers
Samatva's Approach to Intellectual Disabilities:
We focus on FUNCTIONAL skills, not just academics:
Daily Living Skills:
Self-care: dressing, grooming, toileting, eating
Home management: cleaning up, simple chores
Safety awareness: strangers, traffic, emergencies
Money management: identifying coins/notes, basic transactions
Communication Skills:
Functional language for expressing needs
Understanding and following instructions
Social communication basics
Augmentative communication if needed
Academic Skills (Functional):
Recognizing important words and signs
Writing name and basic information
Functional math: counting money, telling time
Life-relevant reading: menus, schedules, labels
Social & Vocational Skills:
Following routines and schedules
Working with others
Following multi-step instructions
Age-appropriate leisure activities
Pre-vocational skills for older children
Our Philosophy:
Success = Maximum independence possible. For some children, that's attending college. For others, it's living semi-independently with support. We meet your child where they are and build toward their potential, not someone else's expectations.
πΆ 5. Developmental Delays (Global or Specific)
When Milestones Come Later
Developmental delays mean a child is significantly behind age-expected milestones in one or more areas: motor skills, language, cognition, social-emotional development, or adaptive behaviors.
Early intervention is CRITICALβthe younger we start, the better the outcomes.
Types of Delays We Address:
Motor Delays:
Gross motor: sitting, crawling, walking, running, climbing
Fine motor: grasping, drawing, using utensils, buttoning
Language Delays:
Not babbling by 12 months
No words by 18 months
Not combining words by age 2
Limited vocabulary compared to peers
Cognitive Delays:
Difficulty understanding cause and effect
Limited problem-solving abilities
Struggles with shape, color, number concepts

Limited interaction with peers
Difficulty understanding emotions
Doesn't engage in pretend play

π£οΈ 6. Speech & Language Delays
When Words Don't Come Easily
Speech and language delays are among the most common developmental concerns. Some children have speech disorders (difficulty producing sounds), others have language disorders (difficulty understanding or expressing ideas).
Signs of Speech & Language Issues:
Expressive Language (Speaking):
Limited vocabulary for age
Using gestures instead of words
Short, simple sentences
Grammatical errors beyond age expectations
Difficulty finding the right words

Receptive Language (Understanding):
Doesn't follow simple instructions
Asks "what?" frequently
Seems to ignore when spoken to (but hearing is normal)
Difficulty understanding questions
Confused by conversations
Articulation/Phonology:
Substitutes sounds (saying "tat" for "cat")
Omits sounds (saying "ca" for "cat")
Distorts sounds (lisping)
Speech is hard to understand beyond age-appropriate level

π€ 7. Behavioral Concerns
Understanding the "Why" Behind Challenging Behaviors
Challenging behaviorsβaggression, tantrums, defiance, self-injuryβare never "just bad behavior." Behavior is communication. When children act out, they're trying to tell us something they can't express in words.
Common Behavioral Challenges We Address:
Aggression:
Hitting, kicking, biting others
Throwing or destroying objects
Verbal aggression (yelling, threatening)
Non-Compliance:
Refusing to follow instructions
Arguing or negotiating excessively
Walking away when asked to do something
Self-Injurious Behaviors:
Head-banging, scratching, biting self
Hair-pulling
Any behavior causing physical harm to self
Meltdowns & Tantrums:
Intense emotional outbursts
Difficulty calming down
Triggered by transitions, demands, or sensory input
Attention-Seeking Behaviors:
Constant interruptions
Inappropriate noises or movements
Engaging in behaviors they know are "wrong"
Samatva's Behavioral Approach:
1. Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA):
Identifying what triggers the behavior (antecedent)
Understanding what the child gains from the behavior (function)
Analyzing patterns across different settings
Behaviors typically serve one of four functions:
Escape/avoidance (getting out of a demand)
Attention (positive or negative)
Access to tangibles (getting something they want)
Sensory stimulation (feels good physically)
2. Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP):
Teaching replacement behaviors that serve the same function
Modifying environment to prevent triggers
Reinforcing positive behaviors systematically
Developing coping strategies for frustration
3. Parent Training:
Consistent response strategies at home
De-escalation techniques
Preventing power struggles
Building positive parent-child relationships
4. Collaboration with Schools:
Behavior support plans for classroom
Teacher training on strategies
Monitoring and adjusting interventions
Our Promise:
We don't believe in punitive approaches. We believe in understanding, teaching, and supporting. Every behavior makes sense when you understand it from the child's perspective.
π 8. School Readiness Needs

β Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My child hasn't been formally diagnosed. Can we still come?
A: Absolutely. You don't need a diagnosis to start. We'll assess your child and determine if our services are appropriate. If needed, we'll refer you for formal diagnostic evaluation.
Q: Do you provide diagnosis?
A: No. We provide educational assessments and intervention. For medical diagnosis (autism, ADHD, etc.), we refer to developmental pediatricians or psychologists.
Q: How long will my child need therapy?
A: It varies widelyβfrom 6 months to several years, depending on the child's needs and goals. We reassess regularly.
Q: Can you guarantee my child will reach grade level?
A: We can't guarantee outcomes, but we can guarantee evidence-based intervention, regular progress monitoring, and honest communication about realistic expectations.
Q: Do you work with schools?
A: Yes. With parent permission, we consult with teachers, provide recommendations, and help implement accommodations.
Q: What's the difference between you and a tuition teacher?
A: Tuition re-teaches content. We teach the underlying skills (attention, memory, processing) that allow learning to happen. For children with special needs, this is critical.
Q: My child goes to a special school. Do they still need your services?
A: Some special schools provide excellent education; others have limited resources. We can supplement with individualized therapy, parent training, and specific skill development.
